My last day in Singapore, and I woke up at 630am to try and catch a ride on the Flyer since they were giving out 2009 free tickets. I guess I've lost touch with the Singapore culture, because when I reached at 715am, the queue was insanely long that all the tickets were already redeemed.
I guess I thought that after Singapore day I was prepared to face the true Singaporean, but little did I know how the true Singaporean behaved. So our back up plan was to get a ride at the Singapore bumboat tours. When we reached, there was no queue, so we waited around not sure if we got the right place. Then we recognised a lady who was at the flyer with us trying to get free tickets. And she was so much more Singaporean than we could ever be. She tried to befriend the ticket aunty to get ahead on the basis of a more familiar relationship, but the aunty was too pro to be fooled by that. Then she tried to cut queue, even after the ticket numbers were issued, but once again, the ticket aunty was too smart and insisted we follow the numbers. So the lady gave up, and returned to her family. Oh! And I almost forgot, the free tickets were issued 4 to a person. And the person had to show some SMS before getting the ticket, but this lady used 3 phones!!! Her husband's, who looked totally ignorant of his wife's behaviour, her own phone, and her maid's phone!!!!
Gosh, I witnessed the next stage in the evolution of Singaporean culture. Sending maids to queue up instead.
